Rwanda Government Offers Condolences After Deadly Bus Crash in Rulindo

The Government of Rwanda has expressed its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in a tragic bus accident that claimed 20 lives and left several others injured. The accident occurred in Rusiga Sector, Rulindo District, involving a passenger bus operated by International Express.

According to an official statement from the Office of the Prime Minister on February 11, 2025, the injured victims were immediately transported to various hospitals, where they are receiving medical attention.

The accident took place on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, when a large passenger bus traveling from Kigali to Musanze veered off the road and fell into a ravine approximately 800 meters deep. The bus was carrying around 52 passengers at the time of the crash.

Rwanda National Police spokesperson ACP Rutikanga Boniface confirmed the details, explaining that the cause of the accident remains unknown at this time.

“It went off the road and fell about 800 meters down. As you know, this area has steep hills,” he stated.

The Mayor of Rulindo District, Mukanyirigira Judith, confirmed that 20 people have been reported dead so far, while several others were critically injured and taken to hospitals across Kigali for urgent medical care.

Rescue efforts are still ongoing, with emergency response teams working tirelessly to assist survivors and recover bodies from the crash site. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring that affected families receive the necessary support.

Following the accident, the Rwandan government reminded drivers and road users to strictly adhere to traffic laws and regulations to prevent further tragedies.

“We remind all road users, especially drivers, to observe road safety rules and regulations to prevent accidents that claim lives,” the statement added.

The government continues to emphasize the importance of responsible driving and is working to improve road safety measures across the country.
