Gasabo: A Teacher Hits School Director in Office

In Gasabo District, Jali Sector, at GS Agateko school, there is news about a teacher who hit the school director on Friday, September 20, 2024, after requesting a work document.

Reports say that the teacher went to the director’s office to ask for a work certificate, but the situation escalated when the director refused to give it, resulting in the teacher hitting the director.

Usually, there are conflicts in schools between administrators and teachers, often related to performance evaluations, job responsibilities, and accountability. Teachers sometimes raise concerns about issues within schools, such as the mismanagement of student food, which can lead to constant tension between teachers and school administrators.

When asked about the incident, Director Salongo Muyoboke declined to comment and suggested asking the sector or district for more information.

Iyamuremye François, the Executive Secretary of Jali Sector, also stated that he had little to say as the case had already been referred to the investigation department.

Ntirenganya Emma Claudine, the spokesperson for Kigali City and in charge of education, confirmed the incident. She said, “Yes, this happened. A teacher asked for a document, explaining that the director refused to give it, and then he hit the director.” She also mentioned that the teacher’s case is now being handled by the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), and he is currently under their custody.

If the teacher is found guilty, he could face permanent dismissal from his job. According to Article 97 of the Teachers’ Code of Conduct issued on March 16, 2020, section 11 states that a teacher can be dismissed permanently if they engage in violence at work.
