In Rusizi District, authorities have arrested a 40-year-old teacher, along with a school director and an animator, on suspicion of impregnating students and collaborating in these crimes.
According to reports from BWIZA, the teacher had been under investigation for some time. At one point, he had been called in for questioning at the district level and was briefly arrested. However, people were shocked to see him later walking around freely.
The case gained attention after a community awareness campaign was held in Rusizi on August 26, 2024, aimed at preventing gender-based violence. During the campaign, a concerned parent brought up an issue at GS Murira School. In response, the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) pledged to look into the matter.
The teacher was accused of sexually abusing students, with some of them becoming pregnant. The situation was so severe that some students refused to return to school out of fear they might also be victimized.
It is alleged that the teacher used his shop to carry out these acts during school hours and, during holidays, would take advantage of students at his rented house while his colleagues were away.
The Mayor of Rusizi urged the public to report any crimes, emphasizing that teachers are responsible for guiding students, not harming them. He also warned that any school leaders who are found to be involved in covering up such actions would face serious consequences.
All three suspects are currently detained at the Muganza RIB station.
