Music is like a family that a person chooses to be part of and remains attached to until the end. However, many musicians have faced moments where they considered quitting because of challenges like constant pressure or not seeing any rewards from their hard work.
One such artist is Icyishaka Davis, better known as Davis D. Although he has achieved great success, there was a time a few years ago when he nearly gave up on music. This was mainly because of the lack of support from people and the failure of some of his songs to perform well.
In an interview with InyaRwanda, Davis D, famous for songs like ‘Biryogo’, shared that in his 10 years in the music industry, his work has always been consistent. His songs have been popular on various platforms. However, in 2019, he seriously considered leaving the industry.
He said, “I never really had those moments where I felt like quitting, but there was a time when I thought if my song ‘Dede’ didn’t succeed, I would look for something else to do.”
Davis D explained that when he created the song, he had high hopes that it would be a big hit. However, he also made up his mind that if it didn’t do well, he would leave music and pursue the career he had studied for in school.
Luckily for him, ‘Dede’ became very popular, which he calls a blessing in his life. “That song is the foundation of everything in my music career,” he said.
He confessed that before ‘Dede’, he was scared and thought about quitting music because, despite releasing many good songs, they were not as well received as he had hoped.
He added, “I had released many songs that didn’t perform as well as I wanted. I couldn’t understand why they weren’t as successful as they should have been. But when you look at ‘Dede’, it became a hit in East Africa, not just in Kigali or Rwanda. I had other successful songs, but I hadn’t reached the level I dreamed of.”
Davis D explained that when he released ‘Dede’, he was going through a tough time. He hoped the song would take him from being just another artist to someone who is a role model. It gave him the push to continue his music career to this day.
He shared this story as he prepares for his upcoming concert, “Shine Boy Fest”, celebrating his 10-year journey in music. The concert will take place at Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village, also known as Camp Kigali.
