In Gicumbi District, a 20-year-old young man was arrested on suspicion of theft after he was found drunk inside a bar where he is believed to have gone to steal.
The young man was caught early in the morning on September 23, 2024, inside a bar owned by a businessman named Muzungu. The bar is located in the Byumba sector, Gacurabwenge cell, in Gicumbi District.
It is suspected that the young man waited until the bar owners closed at 1 a.m., then entered the bar through the bathroom by making a hole in the ceiling. However, he was found in the early morning drinking alcohol and was already drunk.
When questioned about why he was in the bar, the young man said that he was just looking for a place to sleep. He admitted to drinking the alcohol and even playing the bar’s radio until he was caught.
He said, “I entered through the bathroom looking for a place to sleep because I had nowhere else to go. I no longer steal because RIB (Rwanda Investigation Bureau) arrested me once for stealing two goats from a neighbor, but I did drink the alcohol.”
The bar owner was surprised to hear that someone was inside his bar because he had locked it before leaving.
Muzungu said, “I had gone to the countryside when I received calls from kids asking if I had left someone in the bar because the door was locked. When I came back, I found everything locked, and we couldn’t figure out how he got in. Then one person went to the bathroom and saw where he made a hole and entered.”
He added, “We found him playing the radio, listening to music, and drinking expensive alcohol.”
This incident was confirmed by Sunday Emmanuel, the leader of the Gacurabwenge village, who told the media that the young man was immediately arrested.
He said, “What this young man did is not easy to handle for our community. We have many youths struggling with drug addiction. You see, this one came all the way from Mabare, entered through the bathroom, and climbed through the ceiling. If he had found a way, he would have entered the big house too.”
Sunday Emmanuel also called on parents to work together with the authorities to ensure a better future for the youth.
