Rwanda National Police Arrest Former Pastor for Public Assault
The Rwanda National Police announced the arrest of Tumusifu John, a former pastor, accused of assaulting a woman who asked him to repay money he owed her.
Incident Details
On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Tumusifu John met Kazayire Joselyne, 48, at the Kayonza fruit market in Irebero village, Nyagatovu Cell, Mukarange Sector. Kazayire was on her way home when she requested Tumusifu repay the 40,000 Rwandan francs he owed her. Instead of paying, he insulted her, then slapped and punched her in the head and chest, causing pain and injury.
Investigation and Arrest
On Friday, November 22, 2024, the Mukarange Police Station transferred the case to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) for further investigation. Kazayire Joselyne filed a formal complaint accusing Tumusifu of assault.
Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province, SP Hamdun Twizeyimana, confirmed that a video of the incident, filmed by a bystander, led to the discovery of the attack.
Background and Capture
SP Twizeyimana added that Kazayire and Tumusifu knew each other well, having previously prayed together. Tumusifu, once a pastor, had recently worked for the Trinity bus company, which transports passengers to Uganda.
After the attack, Tumusifu fled, but police apprehended him later that evening at the Ngoma District bus station. Kazayire was taken to Gahini Hospital for treatment, and Tumusifu was brought to the Mukarange Police Station to explain his actions.
Reminder Against Violence
SP Twizeyimana reminded the public to address disagreements through the proper channels rather than resorting to violence. He emphasized that violence is never the solution and urged individuals to resolve conflicts peacefully. He also reminded everyone that assault is a crime punishable by law. The police, in collaboration with other partners, will not tolerate actions that disrupt peace and security within the community. Please visit our News page to read more.
