South African strength and conditioning coach Ayabonga Lebitsa is set to make a return to Rwandan football club Rayon Sports after parting ways with the team in December 2024.
Reasons for Departure and Return Lebitsa initially left the club due to contract disagreements, particularly over salary demands that were not met by the management. Additionally, reports suggested that Rayon Sports’ head coach, Robertinho, was not keen on working with him. Following his exit, the team suffered a decline in performance, losing crucial points in three consecutive matches.
After a week of negotiations, Rayon Sports officials confirmed that Lebitsa has boarded a flight back to Rwanda and will resume his duties immediately upon arrival.
New Contract and Salary Details According to sources, the club has now agreed to pay him a monthly salary of $1,500. Additionally, his accommodation expenses will be covered by the team.
Changes in Coaching Staff Hategekimana Corneille, who temporarily took over the role of strength coach at the request of Robertinho, is expected to transition to the women’s team, as there is currently no dedicated strength coach for the squad.
Background and Coaching Career Lebitsa, nicknamed “Smash,” first joined Rayon Sports in July 2023 as part of a new coaching team led by Yamen Zelfani. Prior to that, he played football before venturing into coaching, working alongside Rulani Mokwena, the current head coach of Wydad AC. His coaching experience includes roles at South Africa U-17, Bantu FC in Lesotho, and Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila in South Africa.
His return is expected to bring much-needed stability to Rayon Sports as the club aims to regain its competitive edge in the Rwandan league.
