Seven People Arrested in Kibeho for Stealing During a Religious Gathering

Seven individuals accused of stealing from attendees of a holy prayer event in Kibeho, Nyaruguru District, were apprehended by police in the early hours of November 21, 2024.

The suspects were arrested in Agateko Village, Kibeho Cell, Kibeho Sector, during a police operation targeting individuals involved in theft and other criminal activities.

Who Are the Suspects and What They Did

The arrested group includes four men and three women, aged between 19 and 40. Their alleged crimes include stealing handbags, mobile phones, and foodstuffs from pilgrims who had come for prayers. Reports also indicate that the suspects had been ambushing people, assaulting them, and forcefully taking their possessions.

Aloys Habyarimana, the leader of Agateko Village, confirmed the arrests and expressed concern over the disturbances caused by these individuals. He stated:
“These people were creating insecurity through theft, violence, and even domestic abuse. Some of the men would return home drunk and harm their wives.”

Residents Welcome the Arrests

Though the number of suspects arrested is small compared to the scale of crimes reported, the residents of Kibeho expressed relief. One resident, Nyiramana, remarked:
“We feel safer now. However, we know they might have other accomplices. When criminals see their peers arrested, it creates fear among them.”

Authorities Urge a Focus on Productive Work

Aphrodice Nkurunziza, the Executive Secretary of Kibeho Sector, called on the community to abandon theft and engage in productive activities. He said:
“We urge everyone to stop engaging in theft and instead take up work that benefits their families and the community. There are plenty of opportunities for those willing to work hard.”

Police Commend Community Cooperation

The Rwanda National Police praised residents who provided information leading to the arrests and encouraged them to maintain this cooperation. They also warned those involved in criminal activities that similar operations would continue until lawbreakers are brought to justice.

A police spokesperson commented:
“Fighting crime requires a collaborative effort. We call on everyone to report any suspicious activities promptly so we can ensure a safer environment for all.”

A Call for Sustained Peace and Security

Local authorities emphasized the importance of continued community involvement in preventing and combating crime. They encouraged residents to focus on activities that promote development and refrain from illegal actions. By working together, the community can achieve long-term peace and stability.  Src: Umuseke ,Visit our website or visit our stories .
